SIMONE DE BEAUVOIR (1908-1986) - FRANCE

A major figure of the 20th century, Simone de Beauvoir was a committed intellectual, author, philosopher, and pioneer of modern feminism. In 1949, she shook the established order with The Second Sex, a foundational work in which she dismantled the mechanisms of patriarchal domination and famously stated: "One is not born, but rather becomes, a woman." Through this radical analysis of the female condition, she echoed all forms of oppression—whether based on gender, class, or race. In 1954, she received the Prix Goncourt for The Mandarins, but her fight never stopped at literature. Free, supportive, and unyielding, she has inspired entire generations to think about equality, to question norms, and to build a fairer world. Her legacy, still very much alive, illuminates the struggles of both yesterday and today.
